What is new about aFuel®?
The idea of producing hydrogen using renewable energy is not new. Neither is the production of methanol using hydrogen. But aFuel® still presents itself as new technology that can bring a lot of good to humankind.
Compared to other e-fuel processes, aFuel® is economically much more attractive. The biggest arguments against e-fuels – energy and cost intensity – can be refuted using solar power in the Earth’s solar belt.
aFuel® combines the production of eMethanol, the liquid global energy carrier, with a carbon sink process. This part of the CO2 is extracted from the carbon cycle and converted into solid carbon, making aFuel® not only a CO2 neutral but even a CO2 negative fuel. A feat that has never been achieved until now.
Furthermore, aFuel® is a combination of existing sub-technologies, making it comparatively fast in deployment. Most of the processes are already in commercial use today, with a technology readiness level of 8 to 9.

The modern forest
Like a natural forest, our Modern Forest concept takes out CO2 out of the atmosphere and generates O2 as a process output. The modern forest can be up to thirty times more effective than the natural forest. Instead of sugar (C6H12O6), the Modern Forest‘s byproduct is Methanol (CH3OH).
To generate 1kg eMethanol, the system requires 1,38 kilogram CO2, which is captured out of the atmosphere. This is done by state of the art direct air capture technologies.
It is crucial to power the Modern Forest plant purely with renewable energy, in order to have a sustainable solution.
That‘s why it makes sense to build the plants in areas with high solar exposures, such as in Namibia or in Saudi Arabia, where global horizontal irradiation can reach up to 2700 kWh/m² in a year. A 10km² area of photovoltaics in these regions can power a Modern Forest capable of producing up to 400 000 tons of aFuel®.
Powering the world’s needs with aFuel® of course requires many Modern Forests, but there are more than enough areas worldwide that are suitable for our process.

The csink
Today, the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere is well above 400 parts per million (ppm), while before the Industrial Revolution, CO2 levels were below 300ppm. This development already has a massive impact on our planet, and technologies that permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere must be deployed on a global scale. Doing so not only supports humanity’s path to CO2 neutrality, but it crucially also provides a tool to reverse the damage that has already been done. Our solution to this is called the cSink.
The cSink works with the same inputs as a regular eMethanol production: hydrogen and CO2. Instead of producing eMethanol however, we process the two substances into solid carbon in the form graphite, and water. By doing so CO2 transforms to a substance that is chemically inert and much simpler to handle than gases. The process allows the carbon to be permanently and safely stored, effectively taking the CO2 out of the atmosphere forever.
The cSink in combination with the rest of the Modern Forest is what enables aFuel to be the world’s first climate positive energy carrier.
